THE POWER OF VISION THERAPY AND THE POSITIVE IMPACT TO YOUNG LIVES

A true story…

Makayli had difficulties in school since kindergarten and now in fourth grade they hadn’t gone away. She now had an IEP and she was thought to be ADHD and Dyslexic. As a last resort she was brought in to my office to be evaluated. An initial vision exam was done and then followed up with a full developmental vision work-up. Through evidence based testing it was found that Makayli had a number of visual processing problems but not a visual acuity problem, she was seeing 20/20. Makayli had a visually-related learning problem.

So what does this term mean and what difference did it make in Makali’s life. I think this is best described by her mother: “When I first learned about vision therapy I was skeptical if it would be worth it. Makayli has struggled with academic performance since she began school, but we hoped that she would overcome these struggles. Makayli’s biggest difficulties when we began VT was difficulties with reading comprehension, poor confidence to do her work on her own, difficulty with basic math skills and taking at least TWO HOURS each night to complete homework. We had already put interventions in place at school, but she needed extra supports. She has always been a very hard worker, but this didn’t always show with grades. Since attending VT she has just simply blossomed as an individual. This has helped her with self-confidence in and out of the classroom. She reads on her own and has greatly improved her comprehension of what she reads. It no longer takes hours and tears to do homework. She continues to improve in her Math skills and is able to do her homework on her own and only needs help occasionally. She is much better behaved at home and has even earned the Merit Roll since starting VT.”
